Today's Obsession: Grungy Girl

5:05 PM

The feminine/masculine mash up seen on the Spring 2013 runways (particularly the Dries Van Noten show that inspired this post) has a casual coolness that I love yet still carries a hard-ass girly vibe. Plaid is making a comeback for the Spring season in a whole new way being shown in organza, taffeta, and even lamé. When rocking this trend for an everyday look make sure you balance out the harsher pattern of the plaid with more feminine details such as a floral trouser or skirt in a classic fit (to make it daytime appropriate) and a slew of sparkly silver bracelets. Experiment layering different plaids, florals, and solids until you find a combination that you are comfortable with. Add in a pair of killer heels and you're set to go! If you really want to get inspired by the Dries Van Noten show, pair this look with a center part and tousled hair. The following are my favorite looks from the Dries Van Noten Spring 2013 show. A new take on a pant suit. Infusing floral, plaid, and metallic can clearly change up this classic shape! If you aren't ready to take on mixing all these bold patterns at once, take it in pieces! Start basic with a floral jean in a washed color (great for casual) and put a plaid button down on top.

Keep plaid a classic under a suit for your own take on this look. For some flirty flare for your workday outfit, keep the plaid sheer.

Look 18
DYING over these pants! I can just see how great they would look in my wardrobe to pair with anything from a plain white t-shirt to a structured blazer!

Look 26
Plaid for days! If you are going to try this look, especially with the rich colors, definitely stick to a skirt with some movement. The goal is to look like a plaid loving fashionista, not a lumberjack.

Look 36
The answer for any outfit... add an oversized sweater!

I am just in love with this look from head to toe! The pants are ah-mazing! If you are going to wear this much plaid, keep everything in the same color family and make sure to keep accessories at a minimum. Think a simple structured leather bag and a gold watch.

Look 54
So girlie! This is how you take plaid to a daytime event like... oh let's say, a garden party? Perfection!
